Fossils from the approximately 150 million year old Plattenkalken of the Southern Franconian Alps are closely associated with the name “Solnhofen”. They are known and famous all over the world and highly sought after by museums and collectors. Everybody knows the archaeopteryx, probably the most famous fossil in the world. Its timely discovery made it the most important piece of evidence for Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. But the discovery of fossils continues unabated, as evidenced by finds of such spectacular fossils as those of the two dinosaurs Juravenator and Sciurumimus. Today, anyone can become a discoverer in visitor quarries. Science owes many a valuable find, even new species, to the passion for collecting and the scientific interest of laymen.
A team of forty competent authors under the direction of four experienced editors opens “a window into the Jurassic period” in a scientifically correct but also generally understandable way. For the first time, the reader gets an insight into the entire cases of plants and animals discovered so far. From the historical aspects, the use of the stone in architecture and as a lithographic stone, the geology of the different Plattenkalk troughs, their stratigraphy, which is still disputed today, to current research excavations and comparable other Plattenkalk fossil deposits, all aspects are treated in detail and comprehensibly. It is a bridge between palaeontologists and laymen, which will give impulses to both sides, which are necessary to answer the many still open questions. The two-volume work in large format contains 1093 illustrations on 620 pages.
