Nikos Solounias ist deeply involved with horses and their ancient relatives of times long past. For several decades he ventured out into the world to learn everything he can about the history of the equids. His approach of in-depth examination of the modern horse and constant comparison with paleontologic findings afford him rare insights into anatomy and function. In this book the focus is set on three remarkable discoveries in the head, the dentition and the limbs of the modern horse.

In the equine head the the interaction of nasal cavity, the nostrils but especially of the preorbital fossa and the nasal diverticulum are examined in detail. This not only allows new insights into the abilities and functions of the nose but also gives insights into the evolution of the anatomy of the equid face.

In the case of the dentition the interaction between the teeth and the vegetation while chewing provides new insights that explain the structure of the teeth. Additionally new theories about hypsodonty give further insight into the anatomy and evolution of the teeth.

His research on the lower limbs of the horse provide the perhaps most striking results. Investigations of embryos andpaelontologic finds support the novel five-digit scenario of the metacarpals and metatarsals. This reveals misunderstandings and new ideas about monodactyly.

Research projects are often considered under the aspect of concrete applicability only. However, history teaches us that since antiquity fundamental new findings have often been playfully (“ludic”) developed from the curiosity inherent to human beings.

This book tells the story of inventions out of games a priori without the intention of producing something useful. A vase rubbing against the skin became the first electric capacitor, which was later used in a much smaller form in trillions of smartphones. A skillfully bent wire resulted in a patent for the first paper clip. An unsuccessful substitute for car-tire-rubber became the first marketed chewing gum …

The name and basic idea of the “Eh da” initiative came about one evening during a conversation between two biologists over some red wine: Yes, biodiversity in Germany is decreasing, we should do more to prevent the loss! But where is the space for it? There are areas everywhere that are “there anyway” – embankments, dams, roadsides and others! Couldn’t those be used to promote biodiversity?

These considerations gave rise to an “Eh da team” that oversees projects and whose goal it is to improve biodiversity on “Eh da” areas, focussing their effort mainly on insects.

By now, the term “Eh da plots” has become popular, as has the idea of using them to benefit insects. But how does this work? The answer is not simple, because neither are the habitat requirements of insects. It is not enough to promote colorful flowers, because the larvae of flower visitors often have special requirements as well. “Without caterpillars there are no butterflies, without wild bee brood there are no wild bees, and without beetle larvae there are no beetles” is a core belief of the “Eh da” initiative. This requires diverse habitats that fit the conditions of the specific “Eh da” area. This book takes a look at how that can be put into practice.

The frequently set goal of being able to harvest as many “beautiful” fruits as possible without chemical plant protection and with a manageable amount of work is often not so easy to realise. This book shows how fruit plants can be kept healthy, bees can be encouraged and delicious, rich fruit can be produced with little effort – through essential vitality-promoting cultivation conditions and the most efficient possible measures against key pests.

The northern Adriatic is in turmoil. Harmful human impact has caused die-offs and drastic changes in the number of species and their structure, with many things changing from bad to worse. However, in marine protected areas and other localities that still are in an almost pristine state, one finds magnificent microworlds, animal communities of the seafloor, exhibiting a wealth of shapes, colours, and life habits – masterpieces of nature. To the human eye, these species’ survival tricks range from decent to weird. They are small but excellent, difficult to find, and a revelation once they are on camera. The present book has been created to celebrate their beauty and tell their stories: How does “natural engineering“ allow for their survival with the help of fans, filters, tentacles, pumps, and slime nets? How can some of them hide in plain sight while others bore into solid rock? What do they do to find mates? This book is meant as an advertisement for those little beauties and their diversity. In an ocean thrown out of balance by human activities, they are in limbo and deserve protection. Guardians wanted!

The authors of this book, a group of dedicated naturalists, underwater photographers, and marine researchers who have watched the northern Adriatic benthic communities for decades, have thus reached deep into their photo collections and into their accumulated knowledge about marine organisms, and present their favourite photos, their favourite tales with the hope that the readers will fall in love with the splendid miniature communities at the bottom of the sea.

The post Marine Microworlds appeared first on Dr. Friedrich Pfeil Publishing.

Underwater naturalists, in a holiday setting, are often perceived as a bit weird. “Look! Why is this person staring at the algae for so long?” or “Hey! Seen this? Somebody is taking pictures in the mud with a huge camera all the time!” It’s a bit the same with the photos these people take “from the mud.” In scientific books, the underwater photographers are often mentioned in small fontsize on the last pages, where they are difficult to find – they run kind of a poor second.

In this book, it’s different. Here, the naturalists and photographers speak up and show why they love nature watching so much and why they sometimes even direct their cameras into the not so attractive corners of the sea ‒ to go after the secret stars, the hidden life invisible to the unexperienced eye – marine microworlds. By doing so, they follow a long tradition of watching marine life in the wild that dates back to the earliest diving biologists, e. g. Filippo Cavolini in the 18th century and Anton Dohrn in the 19th. First, this book is meant to celebrate the little masterpieces of nature found in the Adriatic, their magnificent diversity and their historico-cultural importance, be it as sex symbols, money or food. Second, we want you, dear reader, to fall in love with these miniature beauties of the seafloor. Consider this content advertisement for them, since they need protection. The man-made threats of life in the ocean are massive, and therefore this book is meant as a contribution to its defence, including not only the macroworlds, but also the microworlds of marine life.

Also available in German.

A virus changes the whole world. It has claimed millions of lives. But viruses are not just destroyers or causes of diseases. They can also become our allies and help us fend off other dangerous germs. These are the multi-resistant bacteria that are increasingly threatening us and against which our best weapons, antibiotics, are increasingly failing. There are viruses that specifically kill bacteria – only bacteria. That is what we are talking about here. They have been known for over 100 years and have been almost forgotten about. But now, with the increase in multidrug-resistant bacteria, these viruses are remembered. They have their own name, bacteriophages or phages, meaning the “bacteria eaters”. The dangerous bacteria threaten not least the corona patients in the intensive care units, but all of us, not only in hospitals, also in the case of injuries, in our waters, in animal husbandry. Phages are everywhere and are harmless. Here is described what they could do in our health system – and what they couldn’t. The therapeutic effort is enormous, is personalized medicine and may only be a bridge until we discover new antibiotics – and then the two will be needed together. The book is easy to understand as in a lecture for laypeople, students, doctors and patients, as in a lecture with many pictures. However, there is also an appeal to readers and authorities that we need more research and that the legal requirements make this difficult, even hinder progress. Viruses for cure are based on real scientific evidence, not belonging to complementary medicine. SARS-Corona Virus-2 has shown that we can accelerate more than ever before. It must be done quickly so that we can avoid an antibiotic crisis as the next disaster.

This volume assembles cutting-edge research on the biology, anatomy, and evolution of sharks and bony fishes, featuring works by paleobiologists and associated researchers from 11 countries, spanning topics from taxonomy to statistical methodology, in honor of Professor John G. Maisey, for his pioneering work on Paleozoic chondrichthyan anatomy, taxonomy, and paleobiogeography over his half-century career at the American Museum of Natural History. With an introduction and 16 chapters, this volume erects two new families and two new genera, and provides 160 figures and illustrations, and 29 plates, including the most comprehensive collection of high-resolution images of a rare fossil shark held predominantly in private collections.

Teeth are the hardest and most durable parts of the mammalian body. Even after millions of years they provide a wealth of paleobiologic information. Teeth reflect the interaction of mammals with the environment, as evident from their shape and traces of mastication on their surface. Teeth of fossil and extant mammals provide information on the diet, mode of food processing, biomechanics of mastication, and energy gain. Modern analytical and visualization techniques such as micro-computed tomography, high-resolution surface analysis, and 3D imaging have greatly boosted the research on dental function in recent years. The book “Mammalian Teeth – Form and Function” offers a comprehensive synopsis of the latest advances in the field of dental function research. It will be of interest not only to paleontologists and biologists, but also to students and scholars in archeology, animal nutrition, and dentistry.
